Duffy Poised To Move For Portsmouth Striker

Last updated : 01 August 2002 By Dave Webster
Teletext and the Rivals Portsmouth site are announcing an interest by Dundee for 21 year old striker Steve Lovell who is currently on Portsmouth's books.

Steve Lovell
If signed, Lovell will be one for the future and could feature in Under-21 games initially. It is noticeable that Dundee are signing young players only at present, a distinct change of policy from Ivano who signed older, more experienced ones, on high salaries but apartf from a few unique exceptions, (Caniggia/Ketsbaia) little hunger left to fulfill any dreams.

Steve is 21, being born on 6/12/80 in Amersham, England. The 5 foot 11 inch tall striker is very fast and full of promise and three Portsmouth fans responded with the following reply to my request for info on Steve Lovell: "

1.  "As you know Jim Duffy was assistant to Graham Rix so he must have rated him quite highly, and Alan Ball payed 250k for him as a teenager. I think Steve Lovell will do a good job for you and he's pacy - one for the future. Good luck ."

2.  "Good points :- quick, strong, enthusiastic, quite good when running at defenders, still young enough to improve.

"Bad points :- Not a good finisher, loses head in front of goal, too much other forward competition at Pompey, no obvious signs he will improve."

"Verdict - a reasonable gamble on a free, his wages won't be high and if he gains confidence from a decent scoring spell who knows."

3.  "Fans will like him, he's not afraid to get stuck in and will chase defenders! expect him to force some errors.

"Not a 20 a season man but would seem a good number 10 or link man to the midfield.  May end up playing in midfield?"

So if he's signed as back up, who knows, JD with his experience at man management and knowledge working with young players can bring yet another promising kid to Dens.
