Dundee Deserve Dunt By Dons

ABERDEEN 3, DUNDEE 0

The sun shines bright at Pittodrie, Dundee with full points, start favourites over their old enemies, who are struggling to find a winning combination.

Among six changes from their last line – up Dons introduce 17 year – old Lewis Thom at outside left. The pre kick – off crowd is only a shadow of old "derby" days --- probably around 10,000.

Aberdeen --- Ogston; Cadenhead; Hogg; Burns; Kinnell; Fraser; Baird; Brownlee;

Little; Cooke; Thom.

Dundee --- Liney; Hamilton; Cox; Seith; Ure; Stuart; Smith; Penman; Gilzean;

Cousin; Robertson.

Referee --- A. Cross, Edinburgh.

Aberdeen kick off against sun and a stiffish breeze. Cox ends their first thrust

as cool as you like and sends the ball snaking forward to Cousin. Alan quickly passes back to Gilzean and runs on for the return pass, Kinnell just manages to get a foot in to spoil a bonny move.

Eight minutes before there is a real shot at goal. Little collects a Fraser pass and hits a rising shot for Liney’s right hand corner. The keeper springs to touch it out.

Dundee are over – elaborating, Aberdeen’s more direct tactics have the Dark Blue defence a bit worried. Liney has two pass –backs to deal with in quick succession.

It takes Dundee 15 minutes to get in their first direct shot for goal, Cousin is miles high.

A nearer thing at the other end, where Cooke takes a Thom throw in, leaves Ure floundering and scrapes the bar.

Penalty dispute

Liney is kept busy with pass – backs and chasing out to collect long punts by the Dons half – backs. He has to drop smartly on a safety flick back by Cox right at the post. In 23 minutes, Hamilton nods down a ball inside the box as clean as a whistle. He clears the ball and play goes on for several seconds before the whistle goes. The referee consults the linesman whose flag is in the air. Back he comes and points to the penalty spot. The whole Dundee side gathers around him, but he waves them away.

KINNELL

takes the award and the ball goes home via the foot of Liney’s right hand post.

Dundee still have a leisurely look about them. They haven’t found a way through the no-nonsense Aberdeen defence. Gilzean wins a heading duel with Kinnell and Penman has an opening. His shot is far to direct to bother Ogston.

Cousin has a duel with two defenders at the corner flag. He comes through and flashes a neat pass to Robertson. On to Smith, who is in the clear with a fine view of goal, but again it’s too straight and Ogston holds safely.

In the net

Smith is putting in a lot of work all over the place. He is whistled up for a tackle at the left hand corner of the penalty box. The referee gives an indirect scoring free. Hogg thumps it home but of course it doesn’t count.

Just on half time Aberdeen make it two with a bonny goal. The ball comes in from the left, Baird barely touches towards BROWNLEE at the penalty spot and the latter scores.

Half time ---- Aberdeen 2, Dundee 0.

Half time reflections ---- The only talking point was the penalty award. Otherwise it was a featureless affair, with Dundee putting up a poor show. Dons started shakily but finished with bags of confidence. Liney will welcome his half time break.
