Kevin Thomson says being made to feel wanted by Paul Hartley helped convince him to join Scottish Premiership new boys Dundee.

The midfielder signed a two-year deal at Dens Park just days after being released by boyhood club Hibernian following their relegation from the country's top flight.

Thomson feel out of favour with manager Terry Butcher at Easter Road after being told he could depart the capital club in January.

Scotland international Thomson, 29, says Hartley sold him on a move by unveiling his ambitious plans for the club.

He told STV: "It was an easy decision as soon as I spoke to the manager. I know him really well from his playing days, facing him numerous times.

"I think his record speaks for itself as a young manager, he’s only learning the game as he goes along and to be part of that was something that really excited me.

He’s never mentioned the word consolidate which is a word I hate as a player and as a person. As far as we’re concerned we’ve got nobody to fear this year."

Having started his career at Hibernian, turning in a series of impressive performances over four years, Rangers spent £2,000,000 to acquire his services in January 2007.

After four years at Rangers he moved on to Middlesbrough for £2,000,000, but was plagued by injury and managed just 56 appearances in three years.

However Thomson feels he has plenty to offer his new employers, adding: "I’d like to think I’ve got all the tools to be a good player and fingers crossed I can help the young boys in the squad.

"I always put the onus on myself to prove a point, that’s the way I’ve always been. I challenge myself to be the best I can."

James McPake will join Thomson at Dens Park after becoming one of 11 players to leave Hibs following their play-off defeat to Hamilton.

Both players have been critical of Butcher's man management and the three time capped midfielder couldn't hide his disappointment at the way his career in Leith ended.

He added: "I’ve never hidden the fact the club is close to my heart, I grew up supporting them. [Sunday] was a hard day for me and all my family.

"I don’t want to get in a war of words with the manager [Butcher] but I think it was evident to see the relationship we had.

"It is a fantastic football club and it always will be and I wish them every success in the future.

"The reception I got on Sunday when i came on will stay with me until the day I retire, probably until the day I die."
