Dundee 1893
Article by Footymad Tuesday, 6th November 2001
Dundee Football Club came into being following the amalgamation of the Our Boys and East End clubs in 1893.

The club joined the Scottish League immediately, drawing 3-3 with Ranger in their first game.

Their first decade in the league saw them finish as runners-up on three separate occasions and in 1910 they won their first trophy when John "Sailor" Hunter scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Clyde.

The club were relegated for the first time in 1938 but regained their place in the top division after World War Two.

They were runners-up to Rangers in 1948-49 and won the League Cup for the first time in 1951-52 when the defeated Rangers 3-2 with a last minute goal from Alfie Boyd. The following season saw them retain the League Cup when two goals from Bobby Flavell were enough to see off Kilmarnock.

The early 1960's saw the club its most talented team to date. Players such as Alex Hamilton, Ian Ure, Gordon Smith and Alan Gilzeen were instrumental in Dundee winning the League Championship for the first time in 1961-62.

The following season they fought their way past Cologne, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht to reach the European Cup semi-final before losing to eventual winners A C Milan. In 1973-74 Dundee won the League Cup once more beating Celtic by the only goal by Gordon Wallace.

The club were relegated from the Premier Division in 1975-76 and since then they have you-yoed between the Premier League and Division One with their last sojourn in Division One ending in 1997-98 when they won the Division One title.
